Environmental education fosters learning that can tranform how we think, make decisions, and lead our lives. The future depends on our collective ability to apply an integrated approach to teaching and helping students understand the interrelated elements of sustainable environmental systems-- from ecological, economincal, and community perspectives. --from "Developing a State Environmental Literacy Plan"
The Mission of The GREEN TEAM
The GREEN TEAM is an after school, voluntary club for kindergarten, first and second graders at Kitty Hawk Elementary School. Members of this team focus on being good stewards of our environment by learning as much as they can about the world right outside their door both at school and at home. The club emphasizes ways that Green Team members can impact our local and global community by positive environmental actions and reinforce the importance of nature through various experiential programs.
Many studies suggest that today’s child does not have appropriate amounts of contact with nature due to a variety of factors. Researchers have discovered a strong link between time spent exploring nature and physical, mental and emotional well being. Further, there are correlations between time spent in nature and enhanced creative ability and opportunities to apply scientific inquiry.
The mission of The Green Team is to provide environmental literacy to children outside of curriculum. The Green Team children understand that we live in a unique environment on the Outer Banks that challenges us to be more aware of our stewardship responsibilities even at an early age. The KHES Green Team members are well on their way to become environmentally aware, global citizens.
